HET GAAT OM HET SPEL

Made in 2012 in collaboration with Vincent Knopper. In the context of the ‘Bergense Kunst 10-daagse’ (ten days of art in Bergen) we made a work on a tennis court, titled ‘het gaat om het spel’ (it’s all about the game), that reinvented the logics of the tennis game. We pretended to have never heard of tennis before and to see the game as just an accumulation of pointless abstract rules, lines and objects. The main characteristic of these elements seems that they have no purpose outside of the game itself. We excluded this purpose and extended the abstract rules, lines and objects a bit further.

We decided to, when collaborating, work under the name ‘De Bedoeling’ (the purpose). Our next work will be titled ‘The Aim Of The Game’. We don’t know yet what it will be like…

I See

As a part of the show THE RESEARCH AND DESTROY DEPARTMENT OF BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE, a group exhibition in W139 curated by Jean Bernard Koeman, I made the intervention ‘I See’. It consisted of a small solid version of one of the lighting-shafts of the exhibition space and a set of instructions. The instructions created a situation where one person stood with the object in his/her hands in the ladies toilet, and would watch another person who stood on the highest step of the emergency staircase. The second person could see the lighting-shaft and also the first person standing in the toilet. I think the lighting-shaft became my work and at the same time stayed just a functional part of reality.

Kunstvlaai 2012

In this ‘festival of independents’, organised in an abandoned high school building, the non-profit art space ‘Upominki’ organised a relay-race (estafette) in one of the classrooms: ten day-shifts filled in by ten different artists who responded to the remainders of the work of their predecessors. For my shift I brought in a lot of objects that I continuously rearranged. By doing this I made visual connections with work/material left by the other artists, the classroom and the school building as it was and to pictures from my personal archive. I framed the connections by showing the two elements I was focussing on by using a live-stream which I played on two screens in the hallway just outside the classroom.
